Female Sexuality: Menopause and Later in Life

This 1-hour training will introduce participants to the sexual concerns for women 50+. This course will discuss the common concerns women and couples may experience as women experiencing the natural aging process in their 50s and beyond. Participants will learn about the process of menopause and its impact on sexual functioning. Participants will be exposed to the medical and physical as well as psychological and relational impacts that this life stage has on the women themselves and on their relationships.

About the Presenter

Rivka is an IAPST Certified Psychosexual Therapist, an IAPST Certified Psychosexual Supervisor, an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist, an AASECT Certified Sex Therapist Supervisor, a licensed clinical social worker, a Social Work Board Certified Supervisor, a Faculty Lecturer, a published author, a Harvard University research fellowship recipient, and an experienced lecturer. She is the owner and director of a group psychotherapy practice in Silver Spring, Maryland. She was personally mentored and was trained in sexual dysfunction and sex therapy from internationally renowned Dr. Laura Berman, Oprah’s relationship and sex expert, at the Berman Center in Chicago. In addition to her private practice, Rivka is an invited guest to train doctors, nurses, faculty, fellow therapists, and students at The University of Maryland. She is a Faculty Lecturer at The Integrative Sex Therapy Institute on topics which include female sexual dysfunction, sexual pain, vaginismus, sexual aversion, couples sexual issues, and performing sex therapy with diverse religions and cultures. She lives in Silver Spring with her husband and their five children.

Learning Objectives:

  1. articipants will be able to identify at least three common sexual-health concerns, normative changes, and medical or safety considerations associated with menopause and later adulthood.
  2. Participants will be able to demonstrate 3 clinical/therapeutic interventions to help women experiencing menopause and aging cope with their challenges in individual or couples therapy.

Agenda:

Module 1 — Introduction to Sexuality in Menopause and Later Life

  • Overview of sexual health during midlife and later adulthood
  • Common myths and assumptions about sexuality after age 50
  • Introduction to the biological, psychological, relational, and sociocultural factors that may affect sexual wellbeing

Module 2 — Menopause and Sexual Functioning

10 minutes

  • Overview of perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause
  • Hormonal and physical changes associated with menopause
  • Potential effects on sexual desire, arousal, comfort, orgasm, and satisfaction

Module 3 — Common Sexual Concerns and Normal Variations

10 minutes

  • Changes in sexual response and functioning during menopause and aging
  • Vaginal dryness, discomfort, changes in sensation, and differences in desire
  • Distinguishing common age-related changes from concerns that may require further assessment

Module 4 — Health, Medical, and Safety Considerations

8 minutes

  • Medical conditions, medications, and other health factors that may affect sexuality
  • General sexual-health considerations during menopause and later life
  • Recognizing when consultation or referral to a medical provider may be appropriate

Module 5 — Psychological, Relational, and Sociocultural Factors

7 minutes

  • Body image, self-esteem, mood, and changing perceptions of sexual identity
  • Partner dynamics, communication, intimacy, and differences in sexual desire
  • The influence of family, culture, religion, and social attitudes toward sexuality and aging

Module 6 — Clinical Assessment and Therapeutic Interventions

10 minutes

  • Assessing menopause- and aging-related sexual concerns in individual and couples therapy
  • Strategies for improving communication, emotional intimacy, and sexual adaptation
  • Supporting pleasure, flexibility, and realistic expectations
  • Integrating medical, psychological, relational, and cultural factors into treatment planning
